Wild Idol in David Hockney-inspired afternoon tea at Rosewood London

Known for its iconic Art Afternoon Teas, Rosewood London has just unveiled its latest mesmerising reinterpretation of a classic afternoon tea by Executive Pastry Chef Mark Perkins, inspired by the vibrance and style of David Hockney and his exhibition at Lightroom: Bigger & Closer.

A feast for the eyes and the taste buds, the experience comprises three courses including finger sandwiches, traditional scones and the Hockney-inspired technicolour cakes and pastries that double as works of art, offered with an array of tea pairings or a glass of Wild Idol’s alcohol-free sparkling rosé. With its delicate bubbles and fresh aromatic fruit notes, Wild Idol’s clean taste profile cuts through the sweetness of Rosewood London’s culinary creations for a palate-pleasing experience.

Perkins’ masterful creations offer a stunning reflection of Hockney’s most famous works and take inspiration from Hockney’s life in Yorkshire and Los Angeles, combining classic British flavours with iconic US desserts crafted in never-before-seen ways.

Arguably Hockney’s most famous painting ‘The Splash’ (1966) is presented as a gravity-defying Earl Grey bavarois, with sharp passionfruit and a chocolate sponge layer, covered in a blue glaze to mimic a Californian swimming pool, even featuring a wave of cascading ‘water’.

Another art piece reimagined is ‘The Arrival of Spring’ (2011), a pistachio almond sponge with griottine cherry insert, cherry mousse, wrapped in a chocolate decor, designed to reflect the transformation from winter to spring in the English landscape of Woldgate.

A piece from Hockney’s first major exhibition, ‘The Bigger Picture’ (2012), is depicted as a vanilla cheesecake, with strawberry insert, lemon sponge and vanilla almond sable, enrobed in purple glaze and chocolate leaves, best enjoyed with a crisp glass of Wild Idol’s alcohol free bubbles.

For a fully immersive treat, Rosewood London has also partnered with Camilla Wordie, stylist and set designer, to transform the Mirror Room of the hotel into the world of Hockney. Guests can look forward to a highly detailed and wonderfully whimsical set that includes delightful nods to Hockney’s iconic persona, including his statement yellow crocs, flat cap and sunglasses.
